Name That Tune Tuesday: The Rick Roll

On Thanksgiving Day 2008 an entire nation was Rick Rolled by Cartoon Network and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  I still remember watching it happen.  Mike just started laughing and said, "Did... Did they really just Rick Roll us?"  It was amazing.

Google Celebrate the Day of The Doctor

If you have the chance, stop by Google today.  They are celebrating Doctor Who's 50th anniversary with a fun little point and click game.  The goal is to clear each level by collecting the next letter in Google.  Avoid the daleks or you will have to regenerate.  How are you celebrating today?

Toy Collecting and Pinterest

Screen shot of the My Toys Pinterest board.
One of the boards I have on Pinterest is to show of the toys/figures I have been collecting over the years.   I invite you to follow the My Toys board on Pinterest.  It is very much a work in progress, I don't even have 1/4 of my collection on there yet.  I am actually hoping to get some more pictures added this weekend.  Unfortunately, some of my toys are packed up in the closet for now.  With PenPen starting to climb and walk I don't have as much safe space for everything.  Eventually I want to something like a trophy case to display a lot of them safely.

Do you have a toy, figure, or some other collection you are proud of?  I would love to see it.  Just send me some pictures at silverpixiefly@gmail.com.  I will be more than happy to share your awesome collection with the world.

Six Anime That Have Closure in One Season or Less

I have a big peeve for anime series that end too early, especially if the series is only one season.  At the same time, I have to give props to a series that can end a story in one season.  Nothing is worse than being left hanging.

6 episodes

I could not explain the plot to FLCL if I wanted to.  This show is all over the place with pirates, t.v. robot angels, and a vespa.  That doesn't change the fact that it comes to a successful conclusion after only six episodes.  The more you watch the series the more likely you will be able to understand what exactly is going on.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
26 episodes

Eva is the kind of show that you either love or you hate.  Rarely do I meet someone who felt the show was just okay.  It took a few episodes before I found myself enjoying the show, or what you can call enjoyment as far as Evangelion is concerned.  I am not typically a mech anime kind of girl, so the big robots were a bit of a turn off at first.  The story, to me, is kind of crazy. . . in a good way.  So many of the characters are damaged and you just keep waiting for them to reach out and heal each other.  Spoiler alert: don't get your hopes up.  The general plot is that the Earth is being attacked by Angels.  Humans have made their own "angels" and turn them into giant mechs.  One of the more bizarre bits to the series is that the human made, Evas, can only be piloted by teenagers.

Cowboy Bebop
26 episodes

This series is a music infused space western.  Think of Firefly with jazz themes.  The Bebop is the Ship of two bounty hunters, Spike and Jet.  As the show progresses they pick up new members to their team.  Each character aboard the Bebop brings something to the team that is unique to them.  That includes the welsh corgi.  Sadly, the ending is very definitive and starts preparing you a few episodes before the last.  While everything may not be wrapped up neatly, most your major questions are answered by the end.  All that is left is for the viewer to accept the outcome.

16 episodes

Baccano reminds me a lot of Cowboy Bebop, they both have the same feel to them.  The series is a lot less linear than Bebop, though.  It jumps around constantly between different characters and time periods.  Of course, everything ties together by the end.  This is another series that does better to watch at least twice.  I have to be careful what else I say about this show because pretty much anything relevant is very important to the plot.  The only thing else I can really say is just watch it.

Paradise Kiss
12 episodes

One of my favorite mangas by Ai Yazawa is also a very fun anime.  A lovely girl who is pretty much floating through life without any real direction happens upon a group of students from a fashion school.  What I really like about the series is that is plays up their ages.  The main character, Caroline, is a typical young and naive high school girl.  The moments when she thinks she has everything figured out are the moments when she is most lost.  Her relationship with the group's leader, George, just confuses her further.  This is a very girly series which might be why I like it so.

Madoka Magica
12 episodes

I have already done a little write up of this series here.  The best way I can describe the series is if Doctor Who had a three way with Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura.

Name That Tune Tuesday: Nana

One of my favorite anime/manga series is Nana by Ai Yazawa.  The music to the show is a pretty big deal because most of the story centers around the band of one of the main characters.  The first opening to the series is Nana's band Black Stones/Blast, while the second opening is the rival band, Trapnest.  I may not be able to understand all the lyrics, but I love both songs.

Telltale Games Poker Night 2

I want to like this game, I really do.  The concept alone is pretty awesome.  You are in a high stakes poker tournament against Claptrap from Borderlands, Ash Williams from Evil Dead/Army of Darkness, Brock Samson, and Sam from Sam and Max.  The bartender in the background is Moxxi and the dealer is GLaDOS in all her glory.  Sounds amazing, right?  Not so much, at least not on my PS3.  The game itself is actually really fun for poker lovers.  The banter between the players is pretty awesome as well.  The issue is it runs poorly on my PS3.  Half the time the game is saving the screen freezes and the sound skips.  Twice the game outright froze, so I had to restart it.  Despite the constant saving, the game picks after before the last saved point.  This was very frustrating the second occurrence because I had a miracle had that eliminated two players.  The game saved, a new hand started, mid betting it froze.  When I started it up again it put me at the hand BEFORE the last save, with the two other players still in.  It completely changes the game.  If it was not for these hiccups this would be one of my new favorite games.

Some of the features I was able to enjoy include being able to unlock new skins for your chips, deck of cards, and table felt.  The Borderlands felt was not that impressive to me, but the Venture Brothers cards were pretty fun.  If there is a real deck like that, then I want it!  You can unlock the items by collecting tokens from playing games.  The more people you outlast the more tokens, it seems.  You also have two poker choices: Omaha and Hold 'em.  I am not sure what the first is, so I have been sticking with Texas Hold 'em.

The game is also available for XBOX 360 and PC/Steam.  I would be more likely to purchase it for another console, but I don't want to risk anymore glitchy game play.  I am not saying I won't try to attempt it again in the future because it is an amusing game.  What I am saying is I cannot advise anyone to spend any money on it until it is functioning better.

Name That Tune Tuesday: Peg + Cat

Peg + Cat is a math show on PBS with some very catchy songs.  It is way too advanced for 8 month old PenPen, but she loves it all the same.  She even tries to dance to the theme.

Kamisama Hajimemashita (Kamisama Kiss)

Kamisama Hajimemashita by akumaLoveSongs
Kamisama Hajimemashita is a Shojo fangirl's dream come true.  A high school love story mixed with magic and a happy ending.  This series is only 13 episodes long followed by two OVAs, though only one OVA is out so far.  Normally I am not one for shows where the romance is between a human and an anamorphic character, but the yokai in Kamisama barely show any resemblance to their animals selves when in human form.  This series is a reverse harem high school romantic comedy.  A real mouthful, huh?  The reverse harem is not as strong in the anime as it is in the manga, but there are still hints of it.  The love story is through the eyes of a high school girl who does not seem to have much romantic experience, so every little thing is exaggerated in her mind.

The show opens on the protagonist, Nanami, sitting alone on a park bench.  She sees a man trying to escape a dog by hiding in a tree and assists the man in scaring off the dog.  The gentleman, Mikage, introduces himself and listens to Nanami's story of what brings her to a desolate bench at night.  Nanami's mother  died when she was very young.  Her father had a huge gambling problem and got himself so far into debt that he abandoned her.  With no one to pay the rent, she was evicted and is now homeless.  After hearing her situation, Mikage offers up his home that he had left 20 years ago in return for her kindness.  He sends her on her way explaining to tell the current inhabitants that he sent her so they will take care of her.  When Nanami arrives, she finds an old rundown shrine.  As it turns out, Mikage gave her a mark making her the new god of the shrine.  The inhabitants he left behind were the two spirits of the shrine and a fox demon, Tomoe, that he had made his familiar.

Kamisama by majima123
The main story revolves around Nanami trying to fulfill the duties as the new god of the shrine while trying to gain the approval of Tomoe.  The love story between these two is what really fuels the story.  Almost everything Nanami does seems to be because of her crush on Tomoe.  She is very much the average 16 year old who become easily consumed by her infatuation.  She wants to be a proper god to impress him.  She makes matches between yokai and humans because she wants to believe that her hopes are possible.  It may not always be the direct cause, but it always is an influence in the back of her mind.

Other yokai are introduced, but two in particular take a special interest in Nanami.  Mizuki is a white snake who forms a familiar's contract with Nanami without her consent.  He is extremely smitten with Nanami and tries on several occasions to cautiously sabotage Nanami and Tomoe.  Usually it is through manipulation of Nanami, but he also knows how to push Tomoe's buttons.  Mizuki seems so starved for attention at times that he is merely happen to receive commands from Nanami because it means she acknowledges him.  Kurama is a crow that has infiltrated the human world as a pop idol with the gimmick that he is a fallen angel.  This allows him to sometimes show his wings under the guise that it is just a costume.  He meets Nanami when he transfers to her school.  During their initial encounter he attempts to steal her godly status and fails.  The more he is around Nanami the more he seems to grow feelings for her, though he often tries to hide it by stating he just wants to become the new god of the shrine.  Unfortunately for Mizuki and Kurama, Tomoe is an extremely protective bodyguard.  He rarely lets either of the get close or be alone with his mistress.

As the show progresses, Tomoe starts to realize that Nanami is more than just his mistress/owner/god.  He also has feelings for her, despite being appalled by the idea of humans and yokai sharing love.  Because of this, he is often callous when he does not mean to be.  The show does give a decently happy ending.  The manga is still in production and takes the relationship between Nanami and Tomoe quite a bit further, though it never loses the romantic suspense.  If you enjoy fluffy Shojo and reverse harems, then I suggestion you give Kamisama Hajimemashita a try.  It really does feel like it was designed just for fangirls.
